Kingsbarns

Founded in 2013, Kingsbarns is a relatively new distillery in the East Neuk of Fife. The idea was conceived by Douglas Clement, a former golf caddie who wanted to establish a distillery close to St Andrews. Though initially failing to raise enough funds to get the project over the line, the Wemyss family (of Wemyss Malts) purchased the business and eventually opened doors to the public at the end of 2014.

Kingsbarns produces Lowland single malt whisky. Using barley from Fife farms, and water from Cambo Burn, they’re proud of how they’ve utilised the local environment to create premium products. While a variety of barrels are used during the maturation process, they predominantly use American oak, resulting in a classically soft and fruity Lowland spirit.

Their first release was the Dream to Dram, which was launched in 2018. This has since been replaced as the flagship expression by the Doorcot, a sweet and floral bottling that’s aged in ex-bourbon and STR red wine casks. The core range also includes the Kingsbarn Balcomie, a sherry-finished whisky that provides a spicer take on their usually more subtle style. Alternatively, explore their series of single cask releases – such as this five year old expression, of which only 249 bottles were produced.
