German Whiskey

At House of Malt, we love to showcase the best whiskies from all over the world – especially those from less familiar markets. Here you can explore our selection of bottles from Germany, where the style is similar to that of Scotch or Irish whisky.

German whisky is a relatively new entrant to the market, but it has quietly been growing in popularity since the country’s first single malt distillery, Blaue Maus, opened in the Bavarian Forest in the 1980s. There are now around 150 distilleries making whisky, with the most well-known being SLYRS and Hammerschmiede (who produce Glen Els).

Due to the cool and rainy climate, Germany’s terroir is ideal for growing barley, and thus, producing whisky. As well as malt, distillers are also experimenting with different grains, such as Stork Club Straight Rye

Interestingly, there’s no accepted spelling like there is in other countries, with both the ‘whisky’ and ‘whiskey’ variants being used.

If you’re interested in trying German whisky, browse our range. We stock a selection of malt and grain expressions, with express delivery options and free UK delivery on orders over £90.
