Bunnahabhain whisky was founded in 1881 and today is the only distillery on the island of Islay to use pure spring water in its production process. The water is drawn from the Margadale River and avoids being changed by the plentiful peat that is in the area. While not all Bunnahabhain whiskies are unpeated, their signature blend is an unpeated whisky with much lighter tones. For those looking for a smokier formula, try the Bunnahabhain Moine whisky, which contains Islay peat.
The Bunnahabhain distillery is known for its connection to the sea, as the distillery is situated in a remote area on the Islay coast. The whisky contains the aroma and flavour of the salty sea air from where it is aged, and there is also a recognisable tone from the sherry cask.
When tasted, these scents combine with a toffee flavour, along with caramel, orange, cinnamon, and pepper, making this a really enjoyable and mellow tasting experience. In fact, Bunnahabhain is known for producing some of the most mellow whisky in the island of Islay — other than their peaty offering, Moine.
Here at House of Malt, we offer Bunnahabhain Stiuireadair, Moine, and Toiteach a Dha, as well as 12-, 25- and 30-year-old expressions, so you can choose which one will suit you best. If you enjoy whisky from this island, we offer a selection of even more Islay whiskies, so you can take your pick. We also stock a variety of Scotch whisky from other areas, such as Highland, Lowland, and Speyside whisky.
