Islay single malt brand Smokehead have treated us to new release for 2020; Smokehead Rum Rebel, a special-edition finished in Caribbean rum casks to coincide with International Rum Day. The new expression is bottled at 46% ABV.

Despite its fearsome red skull image, this is actually a pleasingly gentle Islay. No creosote, no tarry ropes, no charred wood, no TCP. Just loads of rich soft peat smoke, with a deft touch of flambé’d banana and other caramelised tropical fruits from the rum barrel aging. For me, it’s no challenge to Ardbeg Drum, but then, Rum Rebel is half the price
