Mortlach

Dating back to 1823, Mortlach is one of the oldest distilleries in the Speyside region. Known as the Beast of Dufftown, it was founded by James Findlater, although it’s believed that illicit production had been happening on the site for years prior.

Mortlach is now owned by Diageo and it is a big contributor to Johnnie Walker blends. Its spirit is big, complex and meaty, which has been distilled twice, before going through a partial third distillation. Its robust character makes it perfect for sherry maturation – although ex-bourbon barrels are also used.

Due to its popularity in blends, single malt releases have historically been few and far between. The entry expression is the Mortlach 12, with other aged bottlings including the 16 and 20 year olds. Special releases are also occasionally available, such as the 2022 Cask Strength
