Sitting on the same site as the Glenlossie Distillery, near Elgin, Mannochmore is a little-known brand of Speyside whisky. It was founded in 1971 by John Haig & Co. and saw workers alternate between the two distilleries (as they were both only open for six months of the year). It’s now owned by Diageo.
As with many Diageo brands, Mannochmore is mostly used for blended whisky. The distillery produces 3.2 million litres of alcohol per year, which mainly goes into the likes of Johnnie Walker and other blends. Single malt releases are rare, although it was known for being the source of Loch Dhu; ‘the black whisky’.
The Mannochmore 12 Year Old is the only official bottling, launched as part of Diageo’s Flora and Fauna series. It’s a bright and vibrant expression, with orchard fruits, citrus and a dry finish on the palate. Independent bottlings are also sometimes available.
