Royal Lochnagar was Queen Victoria's local and favourite distillery, just down the road from the Balmoral estate. Most of the production used to go into higher end blends, but most now is bottled as this lovely, honeyed, well balanced 12 year old single malt.

Royal Lochnagar 12 Year Old Tasting Notes:

Nose

Planed wood, light toffee, boat varnish. Linseed oil behind, even putty, and later a lychee-like acidity. A pleasant fresh woodiness, followed by warm sand.

Palate

Very pleasant, an initial sweetness, more toffee. After a while, coffee with brown sugar.

Finish

Dry, medium-length, with an attractive lingering sandalwood aftertaste.

A Word About Royal Lochnagar

Famous for its royal warrant Royal Lochnagar, one mile from Balmoral Castle, it sits at the foot of the Cairngorm mountains, fed by the crystal clear water of the Scarnock springs. Distillation there is slow to maximise reflux and the stills’ doors are opened after distillation to allow air in to rejuvenate the copper.
