Hatozaki

Hatozaki is a brand of Japanese blended whisky from the Kaikyo Distillery. The distillery is based in Akashi City, in Japan’s Hyogo Prefecture, and the brand is named after the country’s oldest lighthouse – which stands at the nearby port.

Whiskies from the Hatozaki range are a blend of malt and grain from Japan and overseas. The expressions are noticeably light in colour and this gives an indicitation of their smooth and light profile. Despite being labelled as Japanese whisky, there’s a definite Scotch influence.

The Hatozaki Blended is the primary expression from the range. It uses a combination of sherry, bourbon and mizunara casks during maturation, resulting in a well-balanced character, with notes of cherry blossom and orchard fruit. There’s also the Pure Malt, which is made using 100% Japanese and imported malt whiskies. This has more spice and cereal notes, as well as smokey undertones.

For something a little different, try the Hatozaki 12 Year Old, which is finished in Umeshu barrels. Umeshu is a type of plum liqueur that gives this release an added depth of fruity flavour.
