Glenmorangie

Founded on the Dornoch Firth by the Matheson brothers in 1843, Glenmorangie distillery is now home to one of the most popular single malt whiskies in the world. It is believed that illicit distillation had been practiced at this location in the Northern Highlands for many years prior, but offical production didn’t begin until 1849. The distillery was then rebuilt in 1887, and produced consistently until it was sold to partners MacDonald & Muir Ltd and Durham in 1918. Other than closure between 1931 and 1936 as a result of US Prohibition, the distillery continued undisturbed until it was sold to Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessey for £300 million in 2004. Glenmorangie is recognised as a pioneer in ‘finished malts’ having released a number of special wood finishes including Port and Sherry during the 1990’s - something unprecedented at that time. This technique has been adopted by many other distilleries as a method of diversifying their product range. Glenmorangie carries a popular core range including 10, 18, and 25 year old expressions. There are also a number of common finished expressions, such as the 12 year old Port or Sauternes finishes.
