Matusalem
Matusalem is a manufacturer of premium Cuban rum. With a history that dates back to 1872, it was one of the oldest and most respected producers in the Caribbean. The brand was originally founded in Santiago de Cuba by the Camp brothers, but distilling now takes place in the Dominican Republic, following a relaunch in 2002.
The name comes from the Spanish translation of Methuselah, a biblical figure who lived for nearly 1,000 years. It was chosen in reference to the Solera process that they use to make the rum, which blends different rums over time, thus gradually increasing the average age of the final spirit.
Arguably their most recognisable expression is the 15 Year Old Matusalem Gran Reserva. This is the brand’s original rum and still uses the family recipe. It’s a versatile spirit with intense spice and caramel undertones. For something super-premium, try the Matusalem 23 Gran Reserva Rum, an extra-aged bottling that’s rich, complex and smooth.
