Italian Liqueurs

Shop our full range of Italian Liqueurs at House of Malt. Liqueurs and spirits hold an important place in the country’s culinary culture and we offer a selection of some of the most popular ‘liquori’ in the world.

The history of these beverages dates back to the Middle Ages. They became popular in monasteries as medicinal drinks, with monks combining herbs, fruits and alcohol to create unique flavours.

There are two main types of Italian liqueurs; aperitivo and digestivo.

Aperitivo is a ritual that happens before a meal and is designed to whet the appetite. Aperitifs are typically bitter and low in alcohol, with some of the most popular being Aperol, Campari and Negroni. Conversely, a digestivo (or digestif) occurs at the end of a meal and is supposed to settle the stomach. These tend to be sweeter and higher in alcohol content than aperitifs.

The most famous digestif globally is Disaranno, a brand of amaretto for Northern Italy. Other after-dinner drinks include Cynar, Limoncello and Grappa.
