Spiced Rum

Spiced rum is made by adding spices and other flavourings to a base rum. Although the exact recipe will differ from brand to brand, you can typically expect the use of vanilla, clove, nutmeg, ginger or cardamon. Some may also include additional caramel or sugar. The result is a dark, sweet and sticky spirit that can be served on its own or in a cocktail. It goes particularly well with Coke, lime juice, and soda. 

While the origins of this drink date back centuries (as spices were often used to make raw rum more palatable) it wasn’t until the 1980s that it took off as a mainstream consumer tipple. This surge in popularity is often credited to Captain Morgan, who released a spiced expression to the US market in 1984.
