Here we have a full-bodied Danish rye whisky from the Stauning distillery in the Western Jutland region of Denmark. By using a combination of local malted rye and barley, open-fired stills and American oak casks, Stauning has produced a smooth and award-winning whisky with a handmade quality. Double distilled and bottled at 48% ABV, this carries delicious notes of rye bread, berries and chocolate.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Honeyed cereal, hints of roasted coffee beans and spiced fruit compote.

Palate

Drying, peppery warmth balanced by sultana, raspberry and milk chocolate.

Finish

Fresh vanilla pod earthiness with continued herbaceous heat.

A Word About Stauning

Founded by a group of friends in 2005, Stauning is a brand of Danish whisky that produces exceptional malt and rye expressions. It is the oldest distillery in Denmark and has become lauded by critics and consumers.

Production at Stauning follows the same methods of traditional scotch, although they aren’t bound to the same stringent regulations, meaning there's more space for experimentation.

The initial goal was to create whisky in the character of Islay, which has resulted in a peated style. They also offer a traditional single malt series, that’s bourbon cask matured, and a malted rye. All three are combined in the Stauning KAOS.
