Lochlea Cask Strength Batch 3 is the latest instalment in the distillery’s celebrated annual release, offering a bold and expressive Lowland single malt. Bottled at a commanding 59.8% ABV and presented with natural colour and no chill filtration, this whisky showcases the depth and complexity achievable through expert cask selection. A marriage of Oloroso Sherry Butts and Ex-Islay Peated Casks, this edition strikes a refined balance between richness and smokiness, resulting in a dram that is both powerful and elegant.
An excellent cask strength bottling, this release is one of the first bottlings crafted under the direction of Master Blender Jill Boyd, marking a new chapter in Lochlea’s journey with a confident and distinctive signature.

Tasting Notes

Nose

On the nose, the whisky opens with a vibrant burst of ripe red fruits and juicy cherries, immediately followed by a savoury note of BBQ smoke. Layers of dried berries and subtle spice linger in the background, adding aromatic warmth and intrigue.

Palate

The palate is full-bodied and indulgent, delivering waves of dark molasses, black cherries, and bramble fruits. These rich flavours are lifted by warming ginger cake and the grainy depth of toasted rye, all wrapped in a veil of charred wood smoke from the peated casks, lending complexity without overwhelming the sherried sweetness.

Finish

The finish is long and multifaceted, where baking spices and salty peat smoke intertwine with firm oaky tannins. As the intensity gently fades, delicate floral notes of red roses emerge, leaving a lasting impression of sophistication and depth.
