Meikle Toir The Sherry One is a peated whisky crafted at the GlenAllachie Distillery, utilizing mainland peat sourced from St. Fergus. This whisky boasts a peating level of 35ppm and enjoys an extensive fermentation time of 160 hours, which fosters the development of its fruity, multifaceted spirit—potent enough to endure ageing in sherry casks. Specifically, it matures in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry puncheons, following an initial aging phase in American oak bourbon barrels. It’s a select choice for enthusiasts of both smoky and sherry notes in their whisky.

So wanted to enjoy this; a smoked Speyside Malt matured in Sherry Casks – what’s not to like? Now, I admit I do like smoked whisky, in fact 99% of my purchases have a smokey element. However, I can’t say I found this dram a harmonious experience, with ‘rich fruity notes’ mingling with ‘wisps of peat smoke’. Sorry, but for me this was bonfire smoke to the fore and only its colour hinting at its Sherry maturation. Believe me, I did try. Hopefully, its just my jaded palate. This combination should be a sure fire hit and I, therefore, salute its creators!
