Madeira

Madeira is a fortified wine that comes from the island of the same name, just off the coast of Portugal.

Made entirely from grapes grown on the island, Madeira gets it’s unique character from a heating process called ‘estufagem’, where the wine is heated and stored in barrels in a warm setting. This is to recreate the oxidisation process the wine would experience during long sea journeys in the 19th century. It then matures in oak barrels for several years to help develop more flavour.

Madeira comes in varying levels of sweetness (Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malvasia) and is known for its caramel and nutty profile. It’s particularly popular as an after-dinner drink, usually served with dessert or as an aperitif.
