Founded in 1880 by Joseph Drouhin himself, the winery has earned a reputation for producing wines that truly express the quintessential characteristics of the Burgundian terroir. With a pioneering approach to biodynamic and organic principles, Joseph Drouhin has led the way in sustainable viticulture in the region. The name 'Beaune Grèves' is derived from “graviers,” which refers to the small pebbles or gravel found in the soil of the vineyard. This specific texture of the soil contributes significantly to the complexity and finesse of the wines produced here. Located in the heart of the Beaune appellation on a mid-slope, the vineyard benefits from rich clay and limestone soils, excellent drainage, and optimal sun exposure. The Romans, recognising the potential of the hillside overlooking Beaune, were the first to plant vines in this area, a testament to its enduring viticultural value.
The 2016 season commenced with a challenging spring marked by frost and hail, significantly diminishing potential yields. However, the remainder of the growing season enjoyed much more favourable conditions, with a warm, sunny summer allowing for the excellent ripening of grapes. The reduced yield led to grapes with concentrated flavours and an exceptional balance of acidity and tannin, making the wines from this vintage particularly noted for their structural integrity and ageing potential.
